THE HEART OF THE OVER FIFTY WRITER

I thought it would be interesting and insightful to review the history of this blog as I take it into yet another year. I discovered the postings go back to June of 2012 with a blogger account I used to manage, and probably earlier than that with some other cyberspace home long forgotten.

I wonder, as I review the various posts, if I’ve accomplished the goals I set out to achieve when I created this blog. One of my aspirations was to showcase the heart of the over fifty writer.

Over fifty writers have an advantage that sets them apart. It’s known as experience. That’s not to say younger writers do not draw on lessons learned to pen their words. It’s just that the over fifty writer’s experience gains more depth when applied to a wider variety of opportunity over a much longer period of time.

Over fifty writers demonstrate a dedication that enables them to endure. Over and over, the perseverance theme manifests itself. Despite circumstances that may postpone their goals for years, over fifty writers relentlessly pursue their dream of publication, sometimes long past reaching the stage of retirement and adult children. They don’t abandon the adventure because of age.

Over fifty writers fine tune their future through a framework of focus. They know half their lives are behind them, so they hone in on what’s important in the limited weeks, months, and years ahead. They have learned how to organize, prioritize, specialize, and capitalize. They eliminate the extemporaneous and concentrate on the essential.

Over fifty writers have an extraordinary ability to triumph. They struggle with technology they were never exposed to in their younger years. They prevail despite physical ailments that affect their thought processes, fine motor skills, mobility, and sleep. Many face financial constraints that limit their ability to invest in their efforts.

I hope my readers have come to admire the heart of the over fifty writer as much as I have. Every struggle, every success story, every realized dream recorded on the pages of this blog makes me proud to know each and every guest I’ve hosted. It doesn’t matter whether I know that person strictly through online contact or have developed a personal friendship, I am so proud of each and every one of you!

Many of my guests have given away copies of their books, introducing readers to new authors in a wide variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction.

The most important thing this blog has accomplished, in my opinion, is encouragement to other over fifty writers. Countless comments have been left by readers, or sent to me in private emails, expressing gratitude for the support they find in the posts.

So, it’s off to the fulfillment of another year. I pray the words on past and future posts will give you the courage and strength to accomplish your publishing dreams in 2017!

Love this blog post, Patti. The biggest plus I find about being an over 50 writer is that I celebrate all the little successes. Each and every tiny one, no matter how small or insignificant it may be to others, I celebrate. Each time someone votes for my story or I place in a competition, I whoop!
